Why Xavi’s return to Barcelona could be bad news for Liverpool

Xavi re-joins FC Barcelona

Xavi Hernandez has officially returned to FC Barcelona, this time as their manager.

The Spaniard has taken over after Ronald Koeman was sacked last month following poor starts to both the La Liga and Champions League campaign.

Xavi returns to his first-ever club in a time of crisis. All of the big stars from Barcelona’s past have either departed for pastures new or are, in the case of Gerard Pique and Sergio Busquets, past their best and in need of replacing.

Barca’s awful recruitment over the last five or six years has also left them with a fairly poor squad that can only really be saved if someone is able to get the best of the latest batch of La Masia graduates like Ansu Fati and Pedri.

In the league, meanwhile, Barcelona are currently sat down in 9th place – a full 11 points off top spot.

Their Champions League campaign also hangs in the balance, with a loss to Benfica in their next European outing likely to condemn them to a spot in the Europa League.

Xavi eyeing Thiago reunion

Now, though only in the job for a short period, Xavi has already seemingly begun making transfer plans.

The Daily Mail citing Spanish outlet Sport, report that Xavi is looking to bring Liverpool midfielder Thiago back to Anfield and sees the Spaniard as the best option to improve La Blaugrana’s midfield.

It is added that Xavi is said to have already discussed the possibility of signing Thiago with Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta.

Said report seems to hint that Xavi’s interest in Thiago is actually very serious, which would of course be a big blow for Liverpool, who are, when fit, using the Spaniard as one of their three main midfielders alongside Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.
