The new record that Manchester United’s Harry Maguire set against San Marino

England batter San Marino

England qualified for the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 in style by putting 10 past a shambolic San Marino side.

The minnows, the lowest rank side in the world, will be used to being hammered, having scored just one goal across all 10 games of qualifying, but even by England’s standards it was a statement performance.

Full debuts were handed to Arsenal duo Emile Smith Rowe and Aaron Ramsdale, while Conor Gallagher was a half-time substitute, getting his first taste of first-team action.

It was also a special night for Harry Kane, who netted another four goals to move closer to Wayne Rooney’s England record, and took a new record as the highest-scoring Englishman in a calendar year. He also tied level with Gary Lineker for England goals, and now sits just 5 behind Rooney, who is the current record goalscorer.

Harry Maguire sets new record

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, as he did against Albania, opened the scoring for the Three Lions against the minnows. The centre-back powered home a header from a Phil Foden outswinging corner.

In doing so, Maguire set a new England record. He has now become the highest-goalscoring centreback for the Three Lions, overtaking former Chelsea defender John Terry, who netted 6 times in 78 appearances.

Maguire, meanwhile, has managed to break the record in just 42 appearances.

It has been a tough few months for Maguire, who has struggled alongside his team-mates at Manchester United, but this will provide some much-needed comfort for the Red Devils captain.
