Vincent Kompany reveals his Sambi Lokonga comments to Arsenal boss that helped him sign Anderlecht star

Sambi locks down regular position

Thanks in part to an injury to Granit Xhaka, sustained in the sixth game of the season against Tottenham, Sambi Lokonga has played a lot of football for Arsenal this season.

Signed from Anderlecht in the summer for a fee of around 20 million pounds, the Belgian starlet has already made 12 appearances for the club, making him Mikel Arteta’s most used midfielder despite his tender age.

And it is safe to say that Arsenal fans have been impressed by what they have seen from their new signing, with his composure on the ball and passing range particular standouts for the Gunners faithful.

His stock continues to rise too, with his former manager dishing out some high praise to the 21 year old.

Vincent Kompany backs Lokonga to be a star

Now, speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s Youtube channel, Anderlecht boss Vincent Kompany has backed Sambi Lokonga to become the new Yaya Toure, a player that Kompany of course knows very well from their time spent together at the Etihad.

Asked specifically about Sambi Lokonga, Kompany was full of praise, revealing:

“The first thing I did when I saw Sambi is I went to Mikel…. and I said “you’ve got to watch this guy, he’s the new Yaya Toure”. He will never hide away from his responsibility, and you need to be able to give it to people who see the next pass, see the next move, take responsibility, take people on and create the tempo when there is no tempo in the game.

“And for me, that’s what Sambi has that makes him special.”

“He wants the ball no matter what. The team’s not doing well, give the ball to Sambi. The team is doing well, give the ball to Sambi”

Can Sambi Lokonga become a mainstay in the Arsenal midfield and even begin to emulate the talent of Yaya Toure?
