Solskjaer makes bizarre Man United > Man City claim ahead of derby
Manchester United vs Manchester City
Saturday’s early Premier League kick-off is set to see the first Manchester derby of the season play out.
The clash will take place at Old Trafford and the atmosphere is expected to be heated, particularly when taking into account the pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Man United have had a poor start to the season, and were recently smashed 5-0 by bitter rivals, Liverpool.
The Red Devils did then appear to have turned a corner when they beat a fairly lackluster Tottenham side, who have since sacked Nuno Espirito Santo and replaced him with Antonio Conte, 3-0.
However, United looked back to their average selves earlier this week when they just managed to scrape a 2-2 draw with Atalanta in the Champions League.
But whilst there is an expectation that Man City will tear United apart, Pep Guardiola actually has a pretty poor record against Solskjaer.
The Citizens have won just one of the last five meetings between the two sides in all competitions, and you have to go all the way back to April of 2019 to find the last time City beat United in the league.
Solskjaer makes bizarre Man United claim
Though Pep Guardiola has struggled to beat United of late, it has been apparent for some time that City are now the better team in Manchester.
Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired back in 2013, Man City have won four league titles. They have also set to record for the highest points total in a single Premier League campaign as well as becoming the first male English side to win the domestic treble.
Man United, on the other hand, have won one League Cup, an FA Cup a Europa League and not made it past 81 points in the Premier League.
And though we are nearly getting on for a decade since United won the league (they are certainly not winning it this season either), Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claimed ahead of the weekend’s game that United are the number one club in Manchester, which also probably means they are the number one club in the world.
When asked if he could envision City passing Man Utd, Solskjaer stated:
“No, I can’t. But, the thing is, you have to have respect for what they have done in the last 10 years or even more so in the last four or five with how dominant they have been in England and in Europe.
“But we are Man Utd, we are always going to come back, I think we are the number one club in Manchester and that also probably means in the world.”
