Manchester United handed derby day boost as key defender returns to the squad

Raphael Varane injured

Manchester United were dealt another massive defensive blow as Raphael Varane limped out of their Champions League game against Atalanta with a hamstring injury.

The French World Cup winner had only just returned from injury, but was forced off midway through the first half of their encounter with the Bergamo outfit.

It spelt bad news too, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer saying:

“With all the technology now, you expect him to be out four or five weeks with the scans and the pictures we’ve seen of him. Of course, it’s a blow for us. Raphael has come in and been really, really influential”

This leaves Manchester United short a world-class defender for key clashes with Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea in the coming weeks.

Victor Lindelof back with the squad

There was an additional worry for the Red Devils faithful as Manchester United appeared to be down to just two central defenders, with Victor Lindelof not being spotted in the travelling party ahead of the clash with the noisy neighbours.

The United defender was labelled a doubt by his manager, with Solskjaer saying:

“He’s still a doubt but hopefully he can come back in tomorrow and say that he’s ready. I would expect him to be ready, put it that way, but I can’t promise you.”

And now, the Swedish centre-back is with the Red Devils squad, suggesting that he should be ready to start the game against the Citizens. With Varane out, should Solskjaer wish to continue with a back three, Lindelof may be thrust into the action.

Will he make the required difference against Manchester City?
