Sir Alex Ferguson explains why Arsenal supporters ‘should be ashamed’ of Arsene Wenger treatment

Sir Alex Ferguson has recently hit out at Arsenal fans for their treatment of Arsene Wenger at the back end of his stint at the club.

Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal stint

Arsene Wenger will no doubt go down as one of the greatest managers of the Premier League era.

The Frenchman devoted over two decades of his career to Arsenal, guiding the Gunners to three League titles and seven FA Cups.

Wenger’s 2003-04 side, meanwhile, remain the only side in history to go a full Premier League campaign unbeaten.

The latter stages of Wenger’s Arsenal stint, however, proved nowhere near as rosy.

In fact, despite his service to the club, large sections of the Gunners fanbase turned on their long-time boss as he entered the twilight stages of his managerial career.

The Gunners, once a nailed-on top-four side, began to slip down the Premier League pecking order under Wenger.

Whilst the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea thrived, the north Londoners struggled to even secure Champions League football.

This, in turn, led to many Arsenal fans taking the ‘Wenger out’ stance.

Ferguson defends Wenger

But with the added benefit of hindsight, it could be argued that though Wenger finished his Arsenal stint securing them Europa League football, that was actually something of an overachievement.

Unai Emery only just got Arsenal into the Europa League the first season after Wenger left, whilst Mikel Arteta has so far guided Arsenal to two 8th-place finishes in the English top-flight, which is of course not any form of European football.

Now, despite being one of his biggest rivals during his stint at the club, former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has moved to defend the Frenchman, stating that Arsenal fans should be ashamed by their criticism of Wenger:

“He kept them in Europe every year and yet he was criticised. The supporters should be ashamed.”
