Mikel Arteta outlines one of the biggest reasons Arsenal signed Aaron Ramsdale

Arsenal would bring in Aaron Ramsdale from now-Championship outfit Sheffield United over the summer.

The Englishman had previously not enjoyed the best of spells in the Premier League, with either Sheffield United or Bournemouth.

However, Ramsdale is still just 23 years of age, and full of potential. When the shot-stopper joined Arsenal, there was an expectation that he would play back-up to Bernd Leno.

And, for the first three league games of the season, this is what happened, with the German starting in the 2-0 loss to Brentford, 2-0 loss to Chelsea and 5-0 loss to Manchester City (Ramsdale had not yet signed for Arsenal at the time of the Brentford game).

But, following the Gunners’ awful start to the campaign, Mikel Arteta has since dropped Leno, and handed Ramsdale a chance to shine.

And, so far, the young shot-stopper has done exactly that. Ramsdale has kept an impressive five clean sheets in eight outings for Arsenal to date.

His latest heroic display came last weekend when Arsenal beat Leicester 2-0, in no small part due to Ramsdale making several quality saves.

Mikel Arteta on signing Ramsdale

Now, Mikel Arteta has recently opened up on why Arsenal signed Ramsdale.

The signing of Ramsdale looks to have been an inspired bit of business, which has potentially landed the Gunners a no.1 keeper for the next decade.

And, when speaking about Ramsdale, Arteta stated that it was his temperament and how he reacted after conceding a goal or making a mistake which was one of the big reasons Arsenal signed him:

“One of the things that I was most impressed every time I watched a game he played in was his temperament.

“I wanted to watch a lot of clips and moments after he was conceding a goal, making a mistake or sort of difficult moments. And that’s one of the big reasons why we made the decision to sign him to play with us.”
