Concern for Manchester City as key midfielder reveals he asked to be subbed during international clash

Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva has revealed that he asked to be taken off during Portugal’s clash with Serbia on Sunday.

Portugal fail to get the job done

Portugal would face off with Serbia on Sunday evening in their final World Cup qualifying clash.

Fernando Santos’ side headed into the game sat top of Group A with 2nd-place Serbia behind them by three points.

As a result, Portugal were well aware that they only needed a draw on the evening to secure a spot at the 2022 World Cup.

And things did get off to a perfect start when Renato Sanches opened the scoring for the hosts after just two minutes.

However, Dusan Tadic then equalised after 33 minutes before Aleksandar Mitrovic scored a 90th-minute winner to send Serbia though and Portugal facing the play-offs in March of next year.

Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva asks to be taken off for Portugal

During the clash, Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva was taken off after 63 minutes.

Now, the City star has confirmed that he actually asked to be taken off during the game.

And more worryingly for City, Silva admitted he was not up to full match fitness, and that he asked to be substituted when he made way for Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes:

“I played a little bit limited. I tried to give my best until the moment came when I thought that another player would be in better conditions.”

Manchester City’s next clash will see them face off with Everton on Sunday the 21st of November before they then take on PSG on Wednesday the 24th in a huge Champions League tie that could decide who tops their group.

As a result, Pep Guardiola and co. will no doubt be monitoring Silva very carefully.
