‘Almost a sackable offence’: Solskjaer criticised for Manchester United training decision

Jadon Sancho would join Manchester United back in July.

The winger is reported to have set The Red Devils back £73m.

At the time, Sancho’s signing seemed like a major coup. Man United were crying out for a natural right-winger and due to Sancho’s impressive stint in Germany with Dortmund, it seemed as though he was the man they needed to fix this issue.

Sancho would score 16 and assist 20 in just 38 outings for Borussia Dortmund during the 2020/21 season before netting 20 and assisting 20 in 44 games the campaign prior.

So, given his price-tag and previous impressive form, expectations were no doubt high once the 21-year-old signed for Man United.

So far, however, it is fair to say that Sancho has not enjoyed the best of starts to life back in England.

Sancho is yet to register a single goal or assist for his new club across 13 outings.

Solskjaer criticised for Sancho decision

Sancho’s recent struggles were not helped by the fact Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has begun using a 3-5-2, a formation with no wingers, in his last three outings.

The formation change also seemingly led to a pretty bizarre training decision by the Norwegian.

The Athletic reported recently that United had been training Sancho as a wing-back in recent sessions.

Given how impressive Sancho has been as a winger and how much United paid for him, trying to train him as a wing-back instead seems like a pretty bad idea.

As a result, it is not too surprising to see OGS come in for heavy criticism of late, with former player Danny Mills suggesting that training Sancho at wing-back is almost a sackable offence:

“Good luck turning him into a wing-back. He didn’t play for England too much in the Euros because I don’t think he was reliable enough to track back and do the defensive side of it. Dortmund never played him there.

“You bought a winger who is going to create chances and score goals. Suddenly you’re going to play him at wing-back in an unbelievably leaky defence. It’s like, really?

“That’s almost a sackable offence in itself.”
