Jurgen Klopp reveals the one former Liverpool player he wishes he had managed

Liverpool under Klopp

Under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool have enjoyed their most successful period in Premier League history.

The Reds would of course win their 6th Champions League under the German back in 2019.

But the crowning glory of Klopp’s Liverpool stint was obviously their 2020 title triumph.

This would be Liverpool’s first league title in 30 years and their first-ever Premier League title.

The player Klopp wishes he had managed at Liverpool

During this reign, Klopp has of course worked with and moulded some of the best players in football currently.

Mohamed Salah is certainly one of the top five footballers in the world currently, whilst Virgil van Dijk can stake a claim as one of the best centre-backs in Europe at present.

Now though, Jurgen Klopp has revealed the one former Liverpool player he wishes he had been able to manage.

And not too surprisingly, the German would bestow that honour to Steven Gerrard:

“That’s easy, it’s Stevie (Gerrard).

“When we played in Sydney three or four years ago and after the season we didn’t have a proper team and we invited [Steve] McManaman, [Daniel] Agger, Jamie Carragher and Stevie.

“To be honest, I knew Liverpool and I saw him playing, of course, but a little bit advanced age group wise but they were all really good.

“But Stevie, what a player he still was then! I think he was already retired but maybe a youth coach here. Incredible. Stevie and me together in the roles, he as the man on the pitch and me as a coach that would have been nice. So it’s Stevie.

“Six years ago it would have been a different answer but now I’m here and I know him as a person and as a player so that’s now an easy answer.”
