Benjamin Pavard lays claim to being the best right back in the world, "more complete" than Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold

Trent Alexander-Arnold one of the best

It is clear that going forwards, Trent Alexander-Arnold is one of the best right-backs in the world. His passing and crossing range is brilliant, while his ability to take part in attacks sets him apart from many of his peers in the position.

However, defensively he has previously been found out, most notably against Real Madrid in last season’s Champions League round of 16 tie, where the Reds were knocked out by Los Blancos. Still just 23 years-old, Alexander-Arnold has plenty of time to perfect his craft and improve in that regard, while retaining his attacking verve.

Pavard lays claim to being best in the world

Speaking to Goal, Pavard was quick to back his own ability. Formerly a centre-back that has since been moved to right-back, the Frenchman has excelled, winning the World Cup and Nations League with France, as well as proving a success with Bayern Munich.

Asked on his best position, Pavard claimed:

“My position is a central defender. It always has been, this is where I feel most comfortable, where I take the most pleasure. This is where I find myself the best. I think we see more of my qualities in this position.

However, he spoke on his comfort at right-back, continuing:

If the great coaches put me on the right side, it is because they have confidence in my abilities. With Deschamps I have always been a holder. If he trusts me it’s not for my beautiful eyes or my hair. He is aware of my qualities. After that I have to improve in certain areas: I have to take more risks, more initiatives, I am aware of it and I work on that on a daily basis.

Pavard ended by claiming that defensively, he is the best right-back in the world, better than Alexander-Arnold and Hakimi, saying:

A defender must first defend well. On paper, Pavard may be less sexy than Hakimi, Arnold, but I find that defensively I am more complete. “
