A 98% Rotten Tomatoes ’Queen’s Gambit’ Replacement Is Being Check-Mated Out of Netflix
The Queen's Gambit did just as much for the game of chess as it did for Anya Taylor Joy's career. Released in 2020, the limited series emerged as a word-of-mouth sensation and remains one of Netflix's most-watched shows of all time. It told the entirely fictional story of one character's life as a chess prodigy-turned-world champion, and captured the imagination of millions across the globe for its propulsive narrative and Taylor-Joy's captivating central performance. Chess witnessed a resurgence, and cinema received its first great project about the game, which has been largely underrepresented on screen. Many years ago, however, one of the most celebrated screenwriters of his generation, Steven Zaillian, made his directorial debut with a chess-related movie, Searching for Bobby Fischer. It remains one of the best-reviewed biopics ever made, and is waiting to be discovered on Netflix. However, it'll leave the streamer on January 17, which doesn't leave viewers with much time.
