10 Greatest Classic Rock Instrumentals of All Time, Ranked

Time to jam! As great as rock vocals can be, there are some songs in which the singer would only get in the way. These can be some of the coolest rock songs in a band's discography, from The Edgar Winter Group's "Frankenstein" to The Doobie Brother's "Steamer Lane Breakdown." Sometimes these instrumentals have a bunch of instruments, and sometimes they just have acoustic guitar—such as Van Halen's "Spanish Fly," Yes' "The Clap" and "Mood for a Day," and The Allman Brothers Band's "Little Martha." Sometimes instrumentals feel like jams that are better live, as the band gets to let loose a little more. For instance, Pink Floyd's "Any Colour You Like" is cool, but the album's version doesn't come close to the level of psychedelic beauty that Floyd achieved when they played it live.
