Trailers for James Gunn’s upcoming Superman reimagining have teased an expansion of the iconic lore beyond the Man of Steel’s traditional origin story. It aims to break from the conventional Americana direction of Richard Donner for something more expanded with the influx of cosmic DC Comics superheroes and Clark Kent’s struggle to be a hero during a divisive time in human history. While past Superman movies struggled to recapture the magic of Donner’s 1978 classic and its popular 1981 sequel, 1983’s Superman IIIalmost offered something unique to push the franchise to evolve.
