Tottenham look to avoid Jose Mourinho repeat as details of Antonio Conte’s potential contract revealed

Spurs part ways with Nuno, expected to appoint Antonio Conte

Following a humiliating 3-0 loss to an out of form Manchester United side, news broke on Monday morning that Tottenham Hotspur had parted ways with boss Nuno Espirito Santo, just four months (and 17 games) after appointing him.

In an official statement, the club revealed:

The Club can today announce that Nuno Espírito Santo and his coaching staff Ian Cathro, Rui Barbosa and Antonio Dias have been relieved of their duties.

Fabio Paratici, Managing Director, Football, said: “I know how much Nuno and his coaching staff wanted to succeed and I regret that we have had to take this decision.

“Nuno is a true gentleman and will always be welcome here. We should like to thank him and his coaching staff and wish them well for the future.”

It is now widely expected that Antonio Conte will take the reigns in north London, after having left his previous role at Inter Milan in the summer.

His appointment will certainly be seen as a statement of intent, but have Spurs been down this road before?

Contract proves Spurs are looking to avoid Mourinho repeat

Hiring a serial winner with previous success at Inter Milan and Chelsea? That will sound familiar to Spurs fans, and they have only just recovered from the boring style of football instilled by Jose Mourinho, who departed the club in May and whom Spurs are still working through a 15 million pound payoff for.

Mourinho left just 18 months into a three year contract, leaving Spurs needing to pay off the rest of his deal, as they will have to with Nuno too.

This is a cycle they are looking to break, however, with Antonio Conte. As per reports stemming from Sky Italy, the club are looking to appoint the Italian on an eighteen-month contract, which would give the club more flexibility should it all go wrong.

There is, of course, a flipside that Tottenham should be wary of. Should Conte come in and prove a success, he will have the club over a barrel next summer when it comes to transfers, as he will only have 12 months left on his contract and Spurs would not want to lose him.

It is a situation that is delicately balanced and one that the club will have to handle with care, something perhaps beyond the leadership in north London.
