The personal factor that played a role in Antonio Conte taking the Tottenham job

An insight into why Antonio Conte opted to take the Tottenham job following the sacking of Nuno Espirito Santo has been provided recently.

Conte takes Tottenham job

In something of a coup, Spurs were able to sack Nuno – who had them playing some less than impressive football and struggling to score goals – and replace the Portuguese with Antonio Conte.

Conte has signed an initial deal until 2023, with an option to extend:

The personal reason that played role in Conte taking Tottenham job

Given that Tottenham have won just one trophy this century and have been on the decline since the Champions League final in 2019, it was slightly surprising to see Conte join the club.

The Italian is one of the best active managers in world football right now, starting off Juventus’ reign of dominance over the Serie A before then ending it this past season whilst Inter Milan boss.

Conte has also previously won the Premier League in dominant fashion with Chelsea.

So, why then has Conte opted to take what looks to be a serious downgrade, given he could probably have most jobs in world football?

Well, Duncan Castles of The Transfer Window Podcast has shed some light on that situation recently.

Firstly, Castles outlined what the plan is for Conte at Tottenham:

I think that the plan is stabilise this season, if you can, get a Champions League place and then we will put a lot of money into the market to build a team that can win the Champions League.

Now that’s good in the sense that Conte has bought into that and been convinced. The question mark, obviously, is whether Daniel Levy will go along with the promise that his sports director has made.

Then, Castles added that Conte’s family wanting to go back to England, in particular for his daughter’s education, played a role in the former Juve boss taking the Spurs job:

There’s also an element of his family wanting to go back to England. His 14-year-old daughter, Victoria, for her education purposes they were keen to come back to London, and that personal factor, I’m told, has played a role in this decision.
