The one reason that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is likely to keep his Manchester United job

Back to back Old Trafford humiliations leave Ole’s job on the line

Manchester City strolled out of Old Trafford with all three points after putting on a clinic against their city rivals, with the 2-0 scoreline not even beginning to hint at the sheer dominance from the visitors.

An own goal from Eric Bailly seven minutes in set the tone, before Bernardo Silva poked home on the stroke of half-time with what proved to be the last goal of the game. The second half, though goalless, was as one-sided as games can get, with Manchester City happy to just keep the ball in front of a Red Devils side who looked to have given up.

It is the second consecutive heavy defeat that United have suffered against “title rivals” at Old Trafford, having also been pulverised 5-0 by Liverpool two weeks prior, while a 3-0 win over a Tottenham side who subsequently changed manager will do nothing but paper over the ever-increasing cracks.

In almost any other club of Manchester United’s stature, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s job would be on the line.

The one reason Ole may stay

However, in Manchester, it seems as though the general feeling is that Solskjaer may yet be given the rest of the season. As per David Ornstein of the Athletic:

“There is a sense in the industry that United want to get to at least next summer with the present set-up and are reluctant to fire the 48-year-old while they are still in contention to qualify for the 2022-23 Champions League.”

So why is he set to stay? Well, as per Ornstein, it boils down to one single reason, a lack of replacements. He reports that:

“It appears a significant factor contributing to the stance on Solskjaer is the lack of available or credible alternatives for the post.”

With Antonio Conte now off the market, options are limited, but surely not limited enough to accept the mediocrity that Manchester United currently offer.
