Official: Gareth Southgate extends his England contract until 2024

England qualify in style

England qualified for the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 in style by putting 10 past a shambolic San Marino side.

The minnows, the lowest rank side in the world, will be used to being hammered, having scored just one goal across all 10 games of qualifying, but even by England’s standards, it was a statement performance.

It included four goals for Tottenham forward Harry Kane, as well as first England goals for Emile Smith Rowe and Tyrone Mings, along with a debut for Crystal Palace midfielder Conor Gallagher.

The result meant beyond all doubt that England will be in Qatar next November to compete in the next iteration of the World Cup, having gained automatic entry through winning the group.

While it is expected, it should not be knocked, with both Italy and Portugal failing to make it through automatically, and now finding themselves at the mercy of a play-off as a result.

For England, there is more good news.

Southgate announces contract extension

Now, the man who has masterminded England’s recent Semi-final and Final runs has been rewarded, in the form of a new contract.

Southgate has been criticised before for tactical inflexibility, and his tendency to prioritise defensive structure in spite of the attacking assets at his disposal, but his record is nonetheless very impressive, with England last having reached a final in 1966, and a semi-final in 1996, before his arrival.

This means that he will take charge of Nation for the 2024 Euros too, giving the former Middlesborough manager two chances to bring silverware back for the Three Lions.

Should he prove successful, a new contract will surely be on the table, as well as the freedom of the country.
