In his own words: Why Antonio Conte did not join Tottenham Hotspur in the summer

Antonio Conte is the new Tottenham boss

Following the departure of Nuno Espirito Santo after the humiliating 3-0 defeat to fellow under-pressure Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United, Tottenham have announced that Antonio Conte has taken the role of head coach.

The deal sees Conte given an initial 18 month contract, with the option to extend it should the relationship flourish. Speaking in an official statement, Conte said:

“I am extremely happy to return to coaching, and to do so at a Premier League club that has the ambition to be a protagonist again.

“Tottenham Hotspur has state-of-the-art facilities and one of the best stadiums in the world.

“I can’t wait to start working to convey to the team and the fans the passion, mentality and determination that have always distinguished me, as a player and as a coach.

Why he did not join the club in the summer

Of course, Conte was Tottenham’s no.1 managerial choice last summer too, but ultimately did not make the switch to north London. And now, on his first day in charge, he revealed why, saying:

“Last summer our union did not happen because the end of my relationship with Inter was still too recent and emotionally too involved with the end of the season, so I felt that it wasn’t yet the right time to return to coaching”

So, what changed? Well, as per Conte, it was the efforts of Daniel Levy that changed his mind:

“The contagious enthusiasm and determination of Daniel Levy in wanting to entrust me with this task had already hit the mark. Now that the opportunity has returned, I have chosen to take it with great conviction”
