How Barcelona’s Pedri followed in the footsteps of Lionel Messi and more with latest success

Pedri a beacon of light

In what has proved to be a difficult 18 months for Barcelona, Pedri has emerged as a shining light.

Signed for what could yet amount to 25 million euros from Las Palmas in 2019 (when he was just 16 years old), the midfielder has already racked up 56 appearances for Barcelona, and another 10 for the Spanish national team, including performances that saw him named Young Player of the Tournament at Euro 2020.

The teenager also penned a new long-term deal with the Catalan club last month, with a release clause of 1 Billion euros, due to run until 2026.

Pedri follows in Lionel Messi’s footsteps with latest award

Now, the 18-year-old midfielder has just picked up another award.

The Spaniard has been proclaimed the winner of the prestigious golden boy award, the Ballon D’or for U21 stars.

Since being inaugurated in 2003, it has seen the likes of Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe and Paul Pogba all pick up the award, suggesting the calibre of player Pedri has the potential to blossom into.

The award itself will be presented to the teenager on 13th December. It will mark a fabulous year for the teen, with Barcelona now seemingly set for the next decade in central midfield with the rise to prominence of Pedri and Gavi, both still teenagers.

And who better to learn under than current boss, and former Barcelona legendary midfielder, Xavi? The pair are in safe hands, and could usher in another period of Barca dominance in the years to come.
