Everton boss Rafa Benitez speaks out on January transfer window
Everton’s thrifty summer
Everton would sign four players during the 2021 summer transfer window.
The Toffees secured the services of Asmir Begovic on a free transfer, presumably to replace Robin Olsen, who returned to AS Roma after his loan expired last season.
Elsewhere, Benitez brought in former players Andros Townsend and Salomon Rondon on free transfers.
And finally, the only transfer fee spent by Everton saw them pay around £1.7m to Bayer Leverkusen for Demarai Gray.
Benitez speaks on January
After a low-spending summer transfer window, Everton fans are no doubt hopeful of seeing their club return to spending decent sums on players soon.
Some of the above players, mainly Gray and Townsend, proved to be good bits of business for the Merseysiders. But it is still quite obvious that Everton lack quality squad depth and will likely need to spend to achieve it.
However, when speaking about the winter window recently, Rafa Benitez suggested that it could be another window for Everton without spending any money:
“I had a conversation with Marcel, and he was explaining, not exactly, but more or less the idea. I think we still have some time to consider what we have to do.
“When you go there and sit down and prepare your plan it may change depending on injuries, depending on the performances of players. I feel that in this case, when we talk about the owner who is someone who has spent £400m in the last years then we cannot blame him for that.
“But, at the same time, it is a pity that we couldn’t spend the money this year because of the financial fair play years. We have to be creative and think about how to manage the situation in the best way possible and be sure that in January we can be stronger.”
