Major FIFA sponsor comes out against the idea of a World Cup every two years

Arsene Wenger floats idea of World Cup every 2 years

Former Arsenal manager and current head of global football development at FIFA Arsene Wenger has recently put forward a plan to hold the World Cup finals once every two years, rather than every four.

The Frenchman believes that fans will appreciate a more regularly held World Cup finals, which would increase the chances to see some of the smaller nations at a major tournament. Equally, as per Wenger’s ideas, International breaks for qualifiers would be scrapped during the season, with teams instead playing them all in one go during October.

This would certainly please fans who tend to view the international breaks as disruptive and boring during the hectic schedules of league football.

However, UEFA and others have already condemned the idea, suggesting that it would mean too much football and dilute the allure of the World Cup. They are not alone, either.

Adidas come out against the idea

Now, Adidas have become the latest to suggest that it would be a bad idea to host the tournament every 2 years. Adidas have sponsored the World Cup, and provided the ball, for the last 50 years, so are a major player when the tournament comes around every four years.

Now, the Adidas CEO Kasper Rørsted has expressed his concern to Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung, saying:

“I don’t think much of a football World Cup held every two years. There’s a European Championship here, there’s a Copa América in Latin America. One should also leave space for other things.”

“I am a passionate football fan … but I think it is important that not only football is shown on television but also biathlon, skiing, tennis or handball. If you push just one product heavily it is not good for any product.”

Will the sponsor’s distaste towards the potential new format make the decision for FIFA when it comes to the World Cup?
