Jurgen Klopp explains why Curtis Jones was not allowed to leave Liverpool on loan last summer
Liverpool clean house in the summer
Liverpool’s summer was largely focused on reducing deadwood in their squad. Xherdan Shaqiri left the club to join Lyon, while Marco Grujic and Harry Wilson also departed.
With Georginio Wijnaldum’s contract expiring, and the midfielder subsequently joining PSG on a free transfer, it seemed as though Liverpool were left light in some areas.
However, they are seemingly setting themselves up for further additions in 2022, when they are more likely to have more financial muscle.
Klopp explains why Curtis Jones was not allowed out on loan this summer
One player who survived the exodus in the summer was youngster Curtis Jones, who was largely used from the bench last campaign. Still just 20 years old, Jones is full of potential but is not getting the regular game time he deserves.
After a strong performance against Porto, which included two assists, his manager was full of praise for the youngster, saying:
“He was the full package against Porto, offensively and defensively. Yes, he’s in a good moment,”
Klopp, however, was quick to explain to Sky Sports why he decided against letting the young talent leave on loan, revealing:
“I didn’t want to let him go to play maybe 30 games in League One. I wanted him here so that he learns our football. And that’s what he did.
“You can learn that off-the-ball work when you stay here because we insist so much on it. For a No. 10 who, for all his youth was involved always on the ball, to get that into your DNA is not easy. It needs time.
“It’s our job to give him all the information we can about the game – offensive, defensive – but when you are around the first team at 17, you have more time to absorb it. I’m really happy we’re now seeing the results on the pitch.”
