Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin backs Chelsea boy for Ballon D’or

Chelsea’s stellar year

Chelsea endured something of a mixed season last time out. Sacking club legend Frank Lampard in January with the club marooned in ninth place in the Premier League and in a terrible rut of form.

In came German boss Thomas Tuchel, and the atmosphere around the club changed, as the former PSG man led Chelsea to Champions League success over Manchester City in Portugal.

As a result, no fewer than 5 Chelsea men were named on the shortlist for the Ballon d’Or (including newly arrived Romelu Lukaku), suggesting that the club have a real chance of having the next winner of the prestigious trophy among their ranks.

Nevin reveals his winner

Speaking exclusively to NetBet, former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin, who now works in media, was clear about who he felt should win the award, and surprisingly it was not one of the Cobham boys. Unsurprisingly, however, it was a Chelsea man in the form of Italian maestro Jorginho.

Speaking on the subject, the ex-Blue revealed:

“I try not to be biased on these topics, but I have always loved Jorginho as player. When Sarri brought him in, everyone thought he was ‘Sarri’s kid’ because he played every week.”

“I felt he was brilliant back then because he was one of few players who could control football games at any level.”

“Even when Chelsea fans were giving him dog’s abuse, I always thought he was amazing.”

He continued to wax lyrical about Jorginho’s ability and style, saying:

“I’ve been flying the flag for him for years, the way he plays is the classic modern-day player.

“It would be wonderful if someone like him was to win it.

“There’s been players like David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne, who technically, are better players on the ball creatively.

“But having the most effect on a game of football in the past year, I don’t think you can beat Jorginho.

“If he got it, I for one would be delighted for him because he would deserve it.”

Would Jorginho be your pick too?
