Benjamin Mendy refused bail for a third time amid rape case

Benjamin Mendy accused of rape

At the end of August, news broke that Cheshire Police had arrested Manchester City full-back Benjamin Mendy, who was charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

This was later confirmed by the club in a statement, which read:

‘Manchester City can confirm that following his being charged by police today, Benjamin Mendy has been suspended pending an investigation.’

‘The matter is subject to a legal process and the Club is therefore unable to make further comment until that process is complete.’

The French defender has since been suspended by the club, and is currently in prison awaiting trial, which is expected to take place in January 2022.

As per the Daily Telegraph:

Mr Mendy is charged with three counts of rape which allegedly took place during a party at his Cheshire mansion on October 11 last year.

He was arrested in November in connection with the alleged offences and bailed by police.

Mr Mendy is further charged with sexually assaulting a woman at a party at his home on January 2 when most of the country was in Tier 4 lockdown.

The final charge relates to the alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl, which prosecutors say took place on 23 August at his home in Prestbury.

The club have since removed any mention of Mendy from their club shop, although the player bio remains.

Defender refused bail a third time

Now, as per BBC News, the Manchester City defender has been refused bail for the third time, meaning that he will remain in police custody until his trial on January 24th 2022, where he has been for the last seven weeks.

Should he be found guilty, the case would mark the end of Mendy’s playing career at any level, and most likely a very severe prison sentence.
