Who Is the Original Mario Voice Actor in ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’?

Editor's note: The following contains spoilers for The Super Mario Bros. Movie. It was unrealistic to expect Mario and Luigi's voices to be identical in The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Nintendo’s video games. Still, we would be lying if we said Charles Martinet was not the definitive voice of the mustachioed heroes. Sure, a movie needs more than a few “It’s a Me,” “Let’s a Go,” and “Mamma Mia” thrown in between jumps and punches. However, while we can understand the appeal of casting big Hollywood stars like Chris Pratt and Charlie Day in the lead roles for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the film adaptation had the moral obligation to homage to the man who gave Mario and Luigi a voice. Thankfully, The Super Mario Bros. Movie finds not one, but two roles for Martinet to play. And both of them have a deep meaning to the franchise.
