Why Mason Greenwood starts ahead of Marcus Rashford in the Manchester Derby

Manchester United face massive clash

Manchester United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer battle to stay in the title race (and perhaps in a job) this lunchtime as they host their rivals Manchester City in Saturday’s early kick-off.

Three points for the Red Devils would take them level with Pep Guardiola’s side, while defeat could see them end the weekend a massive 11 points off early pacesetters Chelsea and would surely rule them out of any title race this season.

Solskjaer decided to stick with the back three that has won them four out of six points across the last two games, with Eric Bailly retaining his place in the side after an impressive outing against Atalanta.

Meanwhile, Mason Greenwood is preferred to Marcus Rashford to partner Cristiano Ronaldo, with Raphael Varane, Edinson Cavani and Paul Pogba all missing out through injury and suspension.

It could prove to be the most important line-up of Solskjaer’s Manchester United reign, irrespective of the result.

Rashford not fully recovered

Now, the rationale behind Greenwood’s selection has been revealed, with James Ducker of the Telegraph relaying that Rashford has been “under the weather” for the past couple of days, so was likely not ready to start the encounter.

Manchester United legend Gary Neville was quick to point out that he felt Greenwood deserved to be there irrespective of the illness Rashford has been suffering with in recent days on his Twitter account, however.

Will it prove to be the right decision?
