The ‘anyone but Newcastle’ policy that could hamper Eddie Howe’s January plans
Eddie Howe facing huge task
After several weeks of searching, Newcastle finally announced the signing of a new permanent manager.
Former Bournemouth man Eddie Howe was named as the club’s new head coach on Monday, November 8th.
Howe joins the club facing the mammoth task of keeping the North East outfit in the top-flight.
And at present, that seems pretty unlikely after 11 games of the campaign. Newcastle would once again fail to pick up a win this past weekend, instead drawing with Brighton.
Whilst that result in of itself is not terrible, it is worth remembering that Newcastle are yet to win a single game this season. And after Norwich saw off Brentford on Saturday, the Magpies are now the only side in the division yet to pick up a win this term.
Newcastle also have one of the worst defences in the Premier League at present, conceding 24 in 11 – only Norwich (26) have shipped more goals.
Newcastle set for tough January?
Given the size of the task facing Howe, it seems imperative that Newcastle spend well in the upcoming January transfer window.
And Howe is seemingly being backed to do so, with it recently reported that Howe would have £50m to spend in the winter market, as well as bringing in some players on loan.
But whilst the cash is seemingly there, Howe looks set to face another big issue in January.
That is, as per the Telegraph, that some Premier League clubs could be set to refuse to sell to the Magpies.
They explain that:
Opposition to the Saudi Arabian takeover is so deep-rooted within some Premier League clubs that it is believed they are ready to operate a ‘Anyone But Newcastle’ policy in terms of listening to bids for their unwanted players in the next transfer window.
The report adds that Newcastle would ideally like to buy or loan players with Premier League experience in January, but could be forced into the foreign market instead.
Elsewhere, an industry expert is quoted by the Telegraph as saying this on Newcastle’s situation:
“Newcastle will find it hard to buy players from some Premier League clubs in January because they would rather see them relegated than take their cash. Some clubs just won’t sell to them.”
