Steve Bruce a shock candidate to become the interim Manchester United manager

Manchester United part ways with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

On Sunday morning, Manchester United announced that they had parted ways with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, following picking up just 4 points from their last 7 games, and after a 4-1 defeat to Watford at Vicarage Road.

While it feels as though it has come months too late, it is ultimately the only decision that was left open to the Manchester United hierarchy after a terrible run of form that has seen them slip from 3rd to 8th place in the top flight, and now sit 12 points off league leaders Chelsea.

Now, attentions turn to who could possibly come into Old Trafford and improve the dire situation.

Steve Bruce an unlikely candidate?

For the longer term, United are thought to be considering Erik Ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino, while Luis Enrique has already spoken against taking the role.

Poch and Ten Hag, meanwhile, are unlikely to leave their current roles, at PSG and Ajax respectively, mid-season, leaving an interim manager as the most likely solution, and one that the Red Devils themselves allude to in their statement sacking Solskjaer.

Now, as per The Athletic, that interim manager could be Steve Bruce.

According to the report, Bruce is interested in the role and believes he can stabilise the dressing room, despite having been sacked from Newcastle United after failing to win a game with the Magpies this season.

Should Manchester United opt for Bruce, it would be the most surprising thing that the club have ever done. However, they are a club that continues to surprise.
