Petr Cech drops hint over Conor Gallagher’s Chelsea future
Chelsea director Petr Cech has, on Thursday, dropped a subtle hint over Conor Gallagher’s future at Stamford Bridge.
Selhurst stint
Midfield starlet Gallagher has of course taken his place front and centre in the headlines to this point in the Premier League campaign.
This comes with the 21-year-old having been afforded a fresh opportunity to showcase his talents amid a season-long loan stint with Crystal Palace.
After impressing across a temporary stint with West Bromwich Albion in 2020/21, Gallagher has taken things up a notch this time round, establishing himself as one of English football’s most highly thought of young talents.
The Chelsea academy product has quickly carved out a starting berth in Patrick Vieira’s ranks in the middle of the park, featuring from the off in all but one of Palace’s league outings over the early months of the term.
His haul of four goals and two assists, meanwhile, has proven key in guiding the Eagles into the top-half of the Premier League table.

‘Completely different’
In turn, amid such a genuinely impressive spell across the capital, it should come as little surprise to hear of murmurs already beginning to mount when it comes to Gallagher’s future back at Chelsea.
The Englishman, who was capped at senior level by Gareth Southgate earlier this week, is widely viewed as a genuine star in the making, rather than just another avenue for potential capital gain on the part of those in a position of power at Stamford Bridge.
The fact remains, though, that Thomas Tuchel’s squad already boasts an embarrassment of riches in the middle of the park, including the likes of N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic and Mason Mount.
But, if the latest comments on the part of Blues legend Petr Cech are anything to go by, then it appears that Chelsea, nevertheless, have plans for their shining loan star as early as next season.
Speaking in an interview with the club’s official website this week, Cech was drawn on Gallagher’s development.
And the goalkeeping icon began by explaining that:
‘For Conor to get the England call-up was absolutely amazing and to make his debut was obviously even more amazing.’
‘If he didn’t go to Crystal Palace and perform but rather stayed here and maybe didn’t play every game then that would never have happened.’
From here, Cech went on to hint that Gallagher’s place in the first-team plans in west London will have changed by next summer, with the midfielder set to return in a ‘completely different situation’ to the one in which he departed:
‘Once you start to play regularly in the Premier League and show what you can do, that gives you all these chances to be selected. If you have the opportunity to do it when on loan, you can come back to Chelsea in a much better and stronger position.’
‘Conor will come back to us in a completely different situation than he was six months ago and that’s the beauty of it.’
