Official: Tottenham announce Antonio Conte as their new manager until 2023

A whirlwind 24 hours for Tottenham fans

It has been a whirlwind 24 hours or so for Tottenham fans, with many surely asking themselves if it is all real or if they have accidentally slipped into dreamland.

First, following a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Manchester United, with the equally inept and under pressure Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in charge, Daniel Levy and co. decided that a change simply had to be made.

The message announcing departing manager Nuno Espirito Santo’s sacking was short, reflective of the meagre ten Premier League games that Santo presided over in north London, of which he won 5 and lost 5.

The Club can today announce that Nuno Espírito Santo and his coaching staff Ian Cathro, Rui Barbosa and Antonio Dias have been relieved of their duties.

Fabio Paratici, Managing Director, Football, said: “I know how much Nuno and his coaching staff wanted to succeed and I regret that we have had to take this decision.

It was the manner of defeats, however, that pushed him over the edge: his side were lethargic, clueless and awful at getting the ball into the opponents penalty box, something that ultimately the manager paid the price for.

It seemed a fitting end to what had been a horrible managerial chase in the summer, with Nuno eventually appointed. Their eighth choice, and one that had already been turned down earlier in the hiring process, was unlikely to ever succeed.

Antonio Conte the new man in

Now, Tottenham’s first choice for much of the summer is at the helm. The club have today announced the appointment of Italian boss Antonio Conte, most recently of Inter Milan and formerly of Chelsea.

It is thought that assurances of funds have been made, while the Athletic report that he has signed an 18 month contract, with an option to extend it should the marriage prove a harmonious one.

Conte will coach his first Tottenham game as the lilywhites welcome Vitesse to the London Stadium in a must-win Europa Conference League game, with Spurs currently sitting third in their group and in danger of not qualifying from Europe’s third-tier competition.

Will Conte change their fortunes?
