Joao Cancelo sets Champions League record with performance against Club Brugges

Manchester City sweep past Club Brugges

Manchester City did their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League a world of good with a convincing 4-1 victory over Club Brugges at the Etihad stadium.

Phil Foden opened the scoring in the fifteenth minute, only for the Belgian outfit to hit back immediately thanks to a deflection from John Stones.

Undeterred, City made it 2-1 just before the hour mark through Riyad Mahrez, before Raheem Sterling added a third 18 minutes from time. There was just enough injury time for Gabriel Jesus to round off the scoring, and take Manchester City to nine points and top of their group with two games to play.

One point against Paris Saint Germain in their next game will see them through, while a win would see them emerge as group winners.

Cancelo provides hat-trick of assists

One of the major talking points of the game was the performance of Portuguese full-back Joao Cancelo. The defender (who often rampages forward) picked up three assists for the Citizens in an all-round exceptional performance.

In doing so, he became the first defender since Achraf Hakimi (in 2018) to provide a hat-trick of assists in a Champions League game, a truly impressive feat. Traditionally a right-back, Cancelo has been playing on the left of defence more often in recent months due to Benjamin Mendy’s legal suspension and issues with fitness for Oleksander Zinchenko.

The City faithful will be hoping that he can replicate his brilliant performance in three days time, when they take on an under-pressure Manchester United side for local spoils.
