Arsenal invincible Robert Pires outlines where the Gunners should strengthen in January
Arsenal’s summer spending spree
Arsenal spent the most money in Europe in the 2021 summer transfer window, in an uncharacteristic turn of events.
In came Aaron Ramsdale (24 million pounds), Nuno Tavares (7 million pounds), Takehiro Tomiyasu (16 million pounds) and Ben White (50 million pounds) to strengthen the backline, with all four having shown moments of quality since they joined.

Further forward, the club invested in Martin Odegaard (36 million pounds) as well as Sambi Lokonga (20 million pounds), as they sought to rejuvenate an ageing squad.

The results have been mixed. After three straight losses, they have embarked on a ten-game unbeaten run that came to an end with a hammering at the hands of Liverpool at Anfield, and leaves them fifth in the Premier League table at 1/3 distance.
Now, in January, they will surely be looking to strengthen further, and former invincible Robert Pires has had his say on the matter.
Pires wants another defender
Pires formed a key part of Arsene Wenger’s side, when he was not injured. The two-time Premier League winner made 284 appearances for the Gunners, racking up 85 goals, and won the World Cup with France too.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, the Frenchman has outlined that he believes Arsenal should be looking to target another defender this January, although it is unclear who he feels in Arsenal’s backline should be replaced.
‘It is difficult but in January if Arsenal can spend money maybe on a defender because I think our midfield and strikers are very good players.
‘In my opinion (they should) sign English players because we need English players in this squad because when you play in the Premier League, you need a player like this.
For example, in my time I played with Tony Adams, Lee Dixon and Martin Keown, Ashely Cole and this is the base for your team. They need to spend the money on a defender in my opinion, English.’
With mounting problems in midfield, and chance creation among the Arsenal side low, is another defender really what will propel Mikel Arteta’s side to a higher-placed finish?
