Antonio Conte sent clear midfield message after Spurs scrape past Vitesse

Viewers of Tottenham Hotspur’s meeting with Vitesse this evening have sent a crystal clear message to Antonio Conte, over the Italian’s selection conundrum in the middle of the park.

Son & Lucas amongst the goals

The Conte era on the Lilywhite half of north London got underway a short time ago.

And what a memorable start it proved…..

Spurs welcomed Dutch outfit Vitesse to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for a Europa Conference League group stage clash, aware that a 3-point haul was absolutely vital in keeping their hopes of a spot in the knockout rounds alive.

And, upon the final whistle sounding, the hosts did indeed emerge triumphant. However, they also did their best to throw away what, at one point, looked an unassailable lead.

After a Lucas Moura strike and Vitesse own goal added to Heung-min Son’s opener inside the half-hour mark, it looked as though Spurs were on course for an altogether resounding victory:

A complete drop off in intensity on both sides of the ball, though, allowed Vitesse to work their way back into proceedings, culminating in the visitors netting not once, but twice before the half-time whistle had even sounded.

And though, when all was said and done, Tottenham managed to hold onto their slim advantage, even the staunchest of Lilywhites supporters would have been hard pressed to argue the fact that Vitesse were worthy of at least a share of the spoils on the evening.

Midfield headache

In turn, on the back of the action coming to a close in the capital, it should not come as too much of a surprise to hear of several members of Antonio Conte’s debut Spurs XI being singled out for heavy criticism.

The likes of Harry Kane and Cristian Romero – dismissed early in the 2nd-half, did not exactly cover themselves in glory versus Vitesse.

It is one particular area of the pitch, though, which, post-match, has been widely highlighted as central to the north Londoners’ woes.

The area in question? The middle of the park.

Antonio Conte opted for a midfield pairing of Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg on Thursday, but the inability of the pair to either keep hold of the ball, or set attacks in motion from deep, nearly cost their new boss dear.

As a result, viewers of the clash, both of a Tottenham persuasion and not, appear to have come to the early conclusion that a Skipp-Hojbjerg pairing will simply not cut it in Conte’s system moving forward, with just some of the social media highlights showcased below:
