Why West Ham’s Michail Antonio is unavailable for Jamaica’s World Cup qualifiers

Antonio will not play for Jamaica in October

Michail Antonio has confirmed that he will not be taking part in Jamaica’s matches during the international break.

Jamaica have three World Cup qualifiers scheduled for the month vs the USA, Canada and Honduras.

However, though Antonio is one of the most in form strikers in Europe at present, Jamaica will have to do without for said games.

The reason for this, as confirmed by Antonio himself, is due to the logistics of the travel difficulties involved currently:

“I can confirm that, unfortunately, I will not be joining up with the Jamaica national squad for the World Cup qualifying matches this week.

“Myself, West Ham United, and Jamaica have all agreed that, given the logistical and travel difficulties involved at present, it is better for me to remain with the club in London at this time. I remain fully committed to Jamaica and look forward to representing my country in the future.”

West Ham boost

Though a blow for Jamaica, Antonio’s decision is likely to come as a huge boost to West Ham.

As already mentioned, the 31-year-old is in fantastic form this season having netted six and assisted four in eight outings.

But, he can also be pretty injury-prone. So, the Hammers are no doubt pleased to see Antonio getting a much-needed rest this month, rather than travelling around the world and playing three games.
