Why Manchester United did not sign a midfielder in summer window
Man United’s midfield
Following the close of the summer transfer window, it has become even more clear to all that Manchester United’s weakest area is defensive midfield.
Fred and/or Scott McTominay are generally deployed in this area, alongside Paul Pogba in the ‘McFred’ pivot.
However, both players (particularly the former) are simply not cut out to be a leading defensive midfielder for a top side.
The Brazilian has been particularly poor over the last few years, prompting Roy Keane to question whether United can realistically challenge for major silverware with the Brazilian in their midfield:
“All of United’s shortcomings have been shown up in the last couple of days. Look at the performance of the two midfielders. [Scott] McTominay is a good, honest player. And they’ve got Fred. As long as those two players are in midfield for Manchester United, they will not be winning any big trophies.”
Why Manchester United didn’t sign a midfielder
With it obvious to almost everyone who watches United on a regular basis that a new defensive midfielder is required, it was somewhat surprising to see the Manchester outfit fail to move for one in the summer window.
Yes, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho did address weak areas of United’s side, but it is hard not to think that Man United will never be able to win anything big unless they sign a proper no.6.
So, why didn’t Manchester United sign a midfielder over the summer?
Well, the Manchester Evening News have moved to explain the reason why on Wednesday.
Firstly, the MEN report that part of the reason United did not sign a new midfielder was because they did not receive a concrete offer for Paul Pogba.
They add that another factor in the Red Devils not signing a midfielder was that the club’s recruitment department were unconvinced there was an attainable ‘game-changing’ defensive midfield option on the market.
Man United fans should not despair too much, though, as the MEN also reported that United have already earmarked Declan Rice as their principal midfield target in next year’s summer transfer window.
