What Jurgen Klopp has said about Pep Guardiola ahead of Liverpool vs Man City

Liverpool vs Man City

Liverpool will look to continue their fine start to the 2021/22 season on Sunday.

The Reds’ last outing saw them smash FC Porto, who had previously gone unbeaten in 18 games, 5-1 in a Champions League tie.

Before that, Liverpool were held to a 3-3 draw by Brentford the weekend prior, but are also the only side in the Premier League who are yet to lose a single game this campaign.

Of course, that could very easily change this weekend, when they play host to Manchester City in Sunday’s late Premier League kick-off.

Man City did lose to PSG earlier this week, and were beaten by Tottenham on the opening weekend. However, their win over Chelsea recently reminded any doubters that Pep Guardiola and co. are still a force to be reckoned with.

Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp on Man City boss Pep Guardiola

Ahead of the game, Jurgen Klopp has been discussing Pep Guardiola.

Over the last several years it has been Manchester City and Liverpool who have dominated the English footballing landscape.

Man City have come out on top in three of the last four seasons, but Liverpool would win it in 2019/20 and pushed the Sky Blues incredibly close during the 2018/19 campaign.

So, with the same two teams battling it out for supremacy, you would assume there would be a fair amount of hostility between the two club’s managers, much like we had seen in previous years from managers such as Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger.

However, at least on Jurgen Klopp’s end, there is no such hostility, with the German stating recently that he likes Pep and respects him a lot:

“It’s true. I’m not sure if I ever told Pep, but I like him!

“I annoy him with things I say in press conferences that are not meant to say anything bad about him or Man City. Somebody on the City staff tells him that ‘Klopp said this’ and I can see in his conference he gets really angry. Sorry for that!

“No, I respect him a lot. I want to win desperately, he wants to do that, and we are completely different personalities, but nonetheless I like him and I respect him.”
