Tottenham boost ahead of Newcastle as update provided on Covid-19 cases

Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur have released a statement on Sunday afternoon, clarifying the situation amid claims of a Covid-19 outbreak in the club’s camp.

Spurs curse their luck

The headline news on the Lilywhite half of North London earlier this week of course came in the form of an update on the wellbeing of Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad.

On the back of the international break’s close, Spurs are set to return to Premier League action later today, in a meeting with newly-minted Newcastle United.

The capital giants will head into the clash aiming to make it three wins from three across all competitions, having brought a dismal spell of September form to an end courtesy of back-to-back downings of NS Mura and Aston Villa.

With less than 48 hours to go ahead of the St. James’ Park showdown, though, Tottenham, on Friday night, were dealt what looked set to be an altogether considerable blow.

This came in the form of widespread claims that two members of Nuno’s first-team squad had tested positive for Covid-19:

‘False positive’

The players in question, who have hitherto remained unnamed, had therefore been expected to sit out all of Spurs’ meeting with Newcastle, Conference League clash versus Vitesse, and ensuing Premier League outing at West Ham.

As outlined above, though, on Sunday, an update on the situation has been provided.

And the news will no doubt give rise to a collective sigh of relief on the part of the Lilywhites faithful.

In a statement across the club’s social media platforms, Tottenham have confirmed that, contrary to reports, the Covid tests carried out this week provided ‘false positive’ results.

Both members of Nuno’s squad are therefore expected to be available for selection at St. James’ Park this evening:

Following a number of reports regarding the health of our players, the Club would like provide clarity to events of the past 48 hours.

After further analysis following Premier League protocol, two players – whose names will not be disclosed due to medical confidentiality – returned false positive tests for COVID-19 on Friday after returning from international duty.
