Romelu Lukaku labelled ‘dull and functional’ by former striker who insists Chelsea aren’t to blame for Belgian’s lack of goals
Lukaku’s Chelsea stint
Romelu Lukaku would make his return to Chelsea over the summing, signing from Inter Milan.
The Belgian enjoyed a solid debut, netting against an Arsenal side whose defence were all over the place at the time.
Lukaku then did not find the net vs Liverpool but would score a brace vs Aston Villa in his following league game, though it is worth noting that no.1 shot-stopper Emiliano Martinez was not in between the sticks for Dean Smith’s team.
Elsewhere, Lukaku has scored one goal vs Zenit in the Champions League but blanked in Chelsea’s loss to Juventus and in his last four Premier League outings.
Di Canio labels Lukaku ‘dull’
Despite Lukaku’s goalscoring drying up of late, Chelsea have still had an impressive start to the season and are currently top of the Premier League.
And now, former West Ham striker Paulo Di Canio has been discussing Lukaku in a recent TV appearance.
When doing so, Di Canio, after bringing up a comparison between Victor Osimhen and Lukaku, stated that the Napoli striker is not dull like Lukaku:
“I heard Bergomi comparing Osimhen and Lukaku. But Osimhen has a different spirit, he’s not dull like him.”
Di Canio also labelled Lukaku a functional player before insisting that it is not Chelsea’s fault that the Belgian is not scoring:
“When the difficulty increased he scored no goals in five games with Chelsea. And it’s not Chelsea’s fault, they are first even without his goals.
“Lukaku does not score. Lukaku is a functional player, as he is Llorente (Fernando) was in Conte’s Juve. Even if Lukaku is stronger than Llorente. Lukaku is functional to a certain type of game.”
