Man United looking to sign midfielder in January as ‘clear target’ emerges

An insight into Manchester United’s January plans have been provided this week.

Man United need a defensive midfielder

Man United would have a solid 2021 summer window which saw all of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo arrive at Old Trafford.

But despite a pretty successful window, there is still one glaring problem area which the Manchester giants need to address, which comes, of course, in defensive midfield.

There are a couple of reasons for this, with the main one to give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer licence to actually play Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba in the same midfield three, without being too exposed defensively.

Pogba is a quality midfielder, but when played in a pivot alongside Fred or Scott McTominay, it is safe to say that United look vulnerable.

And even when the ‘McFred’ pivot is deployed, it is still clear that Man United lack quality in that area.

The easy solution to this would be to sign a top-quality defensive midfielder, something United currently do not have on their books.

Man United eye January move

And, if a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes proves true, then Man United fans should not have to wait too long to see a new midfielder in their squad.

The Spanish outlet report that:

The ‘Red Devils’ will look at all costs to sign a positional midfielder in January to solve many problems in the exit of the ball.

And it appears as though Man United are already aware of which midfielder they wish to target.

That player, as per Fichajes, is Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi, who is described as the clear target:

The Manchester United already know who will search the next transfer market: Wilfred Ndidi. The Leicester City midfielder is the clear target to reinforce the pivot position of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team

Ndidi is 24 years of age and ranks pretty highly when looking at tackles and interceptions made – two of the main abilities needed in a defensive midfielder.

Ndidi would rank fourth in the PL for tackles made in 2020/21, notching 108. He also made the most tackles of any player in the midfield 3rd last season (49).

And, he ranked fourth overall for most interceptions made and is the 2nd best midfielder on that list with 62.
