Liverpool dealt blow as Diogo Jota sent home from Portugal international duty

Jota picks up injury on international duty

Diogo Jota joined up with the Portugal squad for their fixtures this international break, but was a conspicuous absentee in their friendly victory over Qatar, failing to even make the bench.

It later emerged that the Liverpool man, who has started six of his side’s seven Premier League games so far this season, had picked up a muscle injury, and was thus unavailable for selection.

While the extent of the injury was never made clear, it does not appear to be rather more serious than first feared, which could seriously harm Liverpool’s good early season progress.

Jota sent home

Such was the extent of the injury that Portugal have since confirmed that he has departed their squad in order to return to Merseyside, meaning he will play no part in this evening’s tie with Luxembourg.

In a statement, they confirmed:

Diogo Jota was dismissed by the National Selector, Fernando Santos, after being considered unavailable by the FPF Health and Performance Unit to face Luxembourg, in a meeting to be held this Tuesday.

The Liverpool player, who has already left the stage of the National Team, did a conditioned job since the beginning of the preparation, having also missed the match against Qatar.

This leaves Jota a huge doubt for this weekend’s Premier League clash with Watford, now under the management of Claudio Ranieri, although Liverpool fans will be pleased to see both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have thus far emerged unscathed from the international break.

Will Firmino be able to step up in Jota’s potential absence?
