Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp slams England set-up and Gareth Southgate as Curtis Jones returns injured from international duty

Klopp slams England U21 set up

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool have been dealt a further blow to their preperations for the clash against Watford as it has emerged that Curtis Jones joins Alisson and Fabinho in being unavailable for the Saturday lunchtime kick-off.

Speaking on the subject, the Liverpool boss did not hold back in his condemnation of the U21 boss Lee Carsley for starting the Liverpool man against Andorra, a game in which they only won 1-0 thanks to an assist from Curtis Jones, who only appeared as a second-half substitute with the game locked at 0-0.

Klopp said:

“When we talk about federations, Curtis Jones came back from England U-21s injured. Great! It’s hard to get in touch with them. They played Andorra, really important he played there…..”

Klopp takes swipe at Southgate too

There was just enough spite left in the tank to take an ugly swipe at the senior set-up and Gareth Southgate too, with Klopp targetting the fact that Southgate said he picks players on form and then proceeding to pick John Stones over Joe Gomez, despite Stones not having played for Manchester City this season:

“Sometimes Gareth reacts if you are not playing for your club you can’t play for the national team. Obviously there is a special thing for Mr Stones.”

It is clear that the ramifications of the International break have left Klopp seething at his squad being less than fully-fit, but it is fair to say that this was not unexpected this season, and the failure to replace Georginio Wijnaldum, who was an ever-present last campaign, was always going to come back to haunt the Merseyside outfit.
