How Timo Werner responded to his huge, disallowed goal tally since he joined Chelsea
Chelsea see off Southampton
Chelsea played host to Southampton in a Premier League clash on Saturday afternoon.
The Blues headed into the game looking to bounce back from consecutive 1-0 losses vs Manchester City and Juventus.
And, when all was said and done at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea would eventually do just that.
Trevoh Chalobah opened the scoring for the hosts after just nine minutes.
James Ward-Prowse then equalised for the Saints 61 minutes in. Chelsea then looked as though they would struggle to find a winner, but a Southampton red card saw the game shift and the Londoners then put in two late goals from Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell.
Werner on his 16 disallowed goals
His goal against Southampton would be Werner’s first of the Premier League season and made up for his previous effort earlier in the second half being ruled out.
Following the game, it was revealed that Werner has now had 16 goals disallowed since he joined Chelsea last summer.
Said tally was put to Werner during a post-match interview, with the former RB Leipzig man having this to say on it:
“I didn’t hope it would continue like this, but it drops you a little when you always score, celebrate with fans, then to go to the midline for it to get disallowed.
“16 times in one year? It’s hard, but I keep going.
“[The fans’ reception means] a lot. They always stay behind me, and the team. They want to push me, to play my best level here as I did it in the past.
“The best thing I can do is to give my best, to try every game to make them happy.”
