Concern for Chelsea as Antonio Rudiger misses Germany training session
Rudiger shines with Chelsea
If somebody said that Antonio Rudiger is the best centre-back in the Premier League right now based on form, there probably isn’t that much of an argument against such a statement.
Before Thomas Tuchel took over at Chelsea back in late January, Rudiger’s future at Stamford Bridge looked to be on the ropes.
However, since Tuchel’s arrival, he has shown faith in his countryman and has, so far, been very much rewarded.
Chelsea finished 2020/21 with the 2nd best defence in the Premier League despite been pretty poor during the first half of the campaign.
This was followed by Chelsea winning the Champions League and UEFA Super Cup. And, at present, it is the Pensioners who sit top of the Premier League table.
And though a number of stars have excelled under Tuchel, none, especially at centre-back, have been as consistently impressive as Rudiger.
Rudiger’s back problem
As a result, losing the 28-year-old for any period of time would be a big blow for the Blues, who are no doubt eyeing their first Premier League title under Tuchel this season.
Rudiger would start for Germany on Friday as Julian Nagelsmann’s side earned a 2-1 win over Romania.
Die Mannschaft are then set to play out their second and final World Cup qualifier of the break on Monday vs North Macedonia.
Ahead of the game, though, Rudiger looks to have picked up an issue.
As per Bild, Rudiger was absent from Germany’s final training session on Saturday, with the Chelsea star staying at the team hotel with what was described as back problems.
Bild add that Rudiger’s potential involvement vs North Macedonia will not be decided until Monday.
