Subnautica: How to Make Drinkable Water | Screen Rant

Players will be scavenging for survival in Subnautica, and being stranded in an alien ocean can make it hard to get drinkable water. There are several methods of staying hydrated available in the game. Some are better when first starting out and others will be more efficient but will take more advanced materials.
Newly marooned players will find themselves in the Safe Shallows and have plenty of access to fish, one of the most important resources in Subnautica. Bladderfish, the pink fish resembling a sideways heart, will produce a 6oz. filtered water worth +20 H2O at the fabricator. This method will be quickly outdated, as a few materials around the Safe Shallows are all that's needed to make more efficient bottles of water.
Players will next want to acquire one titanium from inside limestone outcrops in Subnautica, or by breaking down metal salvage, and one creepvine seed cluster for two silicon rubber. Combining titanium and silicon rubber at the fabricator will create a survival knife. Once players have crafted a knife they will be able to harvest coral tube samples from the giant coral tubes found around the Safe Shallows. Salt will be the next necessary ingredient and can be found on the ocean floor in most biomes. From the outset, salt will be easiest to find in the Grassy Plateaus or Kelp Forest, and in the Mountains at later stages. Combining these coral tube samples with salt at the fabricator will produce bleach, which can be turned into 2 12oz. disinfected water bottles worth +30 H2O each.

As Subnautica progresses the option to build underwater bases will unlock, opening new possibilities for exploration and a need for more hydration. Once players reach the Aurora Rendevous Point they will have access to a few farmable options. Marblemelons are the best choice for both food and water content, with each fully grown fruit providing +12 food and +14 H2O. Place Marblemelon seeds in a grow bed or a planter to begin farming them, they will take about 800 seconds to mature. Once the Marblemelon is mature the fruit can be plucked by interacting with it, or the player may hit it with their knife to harvest 4 Marblemelon seeds to resupply their grow bed.
Some of the more advanced pieces of hardware in the game will require the player to explore Subnautica's darkest depths to find their fragments. Scanning these fragments will unlock their blueprints, detailing which materials are required to build them with either the fabricator or the habit builder tool. The water filtration machine is one such appliance, and its fragments can spawn in the Jellyshroom Cave, Dunes, Bulb Zone, or scattered around any of the major pieces of wreckage from the Aurora. Once the blueprint is unlocked the water filtration machine will be craftable for 3 titanium, 2 copper turned into copper wire, and an aerogel made from a gel sack and a ruby.
Subnautica's water filtration machine can be placed in a multipurpose room and will produce water and salt in exchange for about 51 energy a minute. It has split storage with dedicated slots, two for water bottles and two for salt, meaning the player has control over which resources it will continue to generate. This device will fill one large water bottle worth +50 H2O roughly every 15 minutes. The water filtration machine will only draw power if it is actively producing resources, meaning the player can effectively turn it off by leaving its inventory slots filled.
Subnautica is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
